This year marks the 20th year Business North Carolina has selected a Legal Elite class. Active members of the North Carolina State Bar Association have the right to vote for the attorneys they deem best in sixteen legal categories. Voters are not allowed to vote for themselves and can only elect members of their own firm if they also elect lawyers from other law firms in the same category, with votes weighted more heavily outside the firm. Less than 4% of active state lawyers have been selected for the 2021 Legal Elite class. This year`s class includes 11 Smith Anderson lawyers, four of whom have been inducted into the Elite Legal Hall of Fame. According to Business North Carolina, less than 4 percent of the state`s 28,000 active lawyers reached their legal elite in 2021.
