The University of the Witwatersrand Legal Clinic has been in existence for over forty years. It started as a small counseling center with the help of students who participated on a voluntary basis. In 1989, the Practical Legal Studies course became a compulsory course for all law students in their final year of study. Wits is a research-intensive university dedicated to improving the quality and quantity of its research results. To do this, Wits has for several years created a separate legal services arm called Research Office: Legal Services, which focuses on managing, negotiating, and facilitating the research contracting process in accordance with Wits` delegation of authority policy. The research office: The legal department worked closely with the researchers to conclude research contracts as quickly as possible so that they could carry out the necessary research in a timely manner. This results in the best negotiated research contract for the researcher, Wits and each contracting party.

The Research Office: Legal Services has fully integrated its activities with those of the Research Development Department, the Research Office, the Legal Office, Wits Commercial Enterprise and the Wits Health Consortium. Therefore, provides a “comprehensive” service to the WITS research community.

The core values of the Office of Research: Legal services are transparency, efficiency and accountability, and the overall goal is to promote good research. Today, Wits Law Clinic is one of the largest legal clinics of its kind in South Africa and is known for its work. For a research contract to be concluded effectively, a researcher must complete the research contract checklist before contacting the research office: Legal Advice – Legal Advisor for Research Contracts. This will assist the legal advisor and researcher in ensuring that sufficient information is provided and that any risks to which Wits may be exposed are managed and/or mitigated, that academic freedom is promoted and maintained, and that the vital purpose of Wits serving the common good is achieved. In addition to equipping students with critical thinking skills in our undergraduate and postgraduate courses, we host three centres – the Wits Law Clinic, the Mandela Institute and the Centre for Applied Legal Studies (CALS). Our centres help us produce meaningful interventions, research and advice of global significance.
